Many of you don’t know my parents, and many of you may not get the chance to meet them. But in their lives is the secret to success in business.
They are some of (if not my greatest) heroes.
Sure, it’s one thing to read about the power of confidence, sheer force of will and faith in a higher purpose in building a business. But I was blessed with the incredible opportunity of witnessing the incredible testament of their power towards truly transforming a life. And this is something I will forever be grateful for.
First let me tell you about my dad.
My dad faced the most dire of circumstances in Colombia as a child. He literally grew up in slums and spent a portion of his life fighting for his life.
Who would ever have expected a boy in his position to build what he has?
This, my friends, was a man with a dream.
A dream that would change the future path for every generation of family that would follow in those footsteps.
Adversity was a constant in his life, but he NEVER stopped doubting that he could solve his way out of any challenge he faced. He promised himself that he would find a way to ensure his family never had to go without like he did.
He built his dream by building the dreams of the people who followed him. Everyone who has ever worked at CDS knew that family was everything, and success to support that family was the most important thing. If you have ever been a part of CDS, you have been a part of a family that challenged you to be better every day.
I have been absolutely honored to be a part of building this company purpose for almost 8 years now. We are only as great as we build our people to be, and I aim to build the lives of every person I am blessed to come into contact with.
And fam, as Gary Vaynerchuk says so elegantly and simply, here is the simple secret to building an incredible business with incredible people.
And care the most.
Because a leader who cares is one who inspires.
My dad has been hard on me in moments that I used to think were unfair. But I’ve grown to appreciate the love with which those things have been done now that I’ve grown older and slightly more experienced. Sure I have disagreed with some of those things, but I never doubted the love behind them.
He cares enough to be very tough when he needs to be. Sure, he can be a little rough around the edges in the way he says things, but that is because he had to be rough to overcome some of the crazy challenges he faced.
He genuinely cares about helping other people, because he’s always taught me that you can never be too cool or too proud to help others in times of need.
I feel Sir Isaac Newton’s words so profoundly:
“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”
I was blessed to be carried on the shoulders of one such giant.
And that giant was my dad.
